Empidonax Evolution: Summary

This final tree shows all of the data presented in the preceding six trees. The color codes show that each branch has at least two unique character states. All four branches have unique habitat and morphology (coloration and/or bill shape). Branch 1 also has the unique placement of the nest in a horizontal fork, while Branch 4 is the only branch with unmarked eggs. Branch 2 has four unique character states, appearance, habitat, nest material, and nest placement.

Overall, these patterns affirm that each branch of the genus Empidonax is on a somewhat separate evolutionary trajectory. Even though they don't look very different, biologically they are quite distinctive. With this foundation, we will now look at within-branch similarities and between-branch differences in vocalizations. {NOT YET AVAILABLE}
